  Investors in infrastructure could lose more than half of their portfolio by 2050.
  
  How much of your investments stand to lose in the near future from physical events such as floods and storms? Are you concerned about the impact of climate change on your portfolio?
  
  The physical risks created by climate change are not limited to a distant future for investors in infrastructure, some of whom could well lose more than 50% of the value of their portfolio to physical climate risk before 2050 in the event of runaway climate change. Moreover, the average investor will also lose twice as much to extreme weather, mostly in OECD countries, compared to a low carbon scenario.
  
  In this webinar we will discuss the impact of extreme climate events on infrastructure valuations and examine the extent of extreme climate driven physical risk in infrastructure investments and the potential concentration of such risks in the portfolio of investors in infrastructure. We show the importance of implementing more ambitious policies to cope with climate change, because, while energy transition and the alignment of economies have a cost for private investors, so does climate change! We highlight that in the absence of an energy transition towards a low carbon economy, physical risks are twice as large and that in extreme cases, portfolios with fewer assets may experience large losses up to more than half of their portfolio value.

  The new annual event of the EDHEC Infrastructure & Private Assets Research Institute takes place over two days to address some of the most burning questions facing investors in private markets.
  
  The event is focused on delivering high-quality content extracted from new academic and industry research that provides direct insights to investment professionals. The research presented at the 2023 event includes a ground-breaking new initiative to measure the fair market value of unlisted equity investments with a high frequency (without using listed proxies), and very important results in the level of climate risks to which investors in infrastructure are exposed before 2050. In a series of keynote speeches, research presentations and panel discussions, EDHEC Private Days highlights the challenges faced by investors in private assets, but also proposes concrete solutions and ideas to better understand and manage them.
  
  Program overview
  
  DAY 1 – PRIVATE ASSETS: Transparency to Restore Trust
  
  The first day of the conference focuses on two key issues: first, what is the role of market forces in shaping the outcome of private asset investing? This question goes to the heart of the measuring the performance of private investments, to what extent they can be benchmarked, and outperformance measured. Second, numerous issues around asset valuation and transparency have come to light that can undermine the trust that investors might have in private investments. Conference participants will be invited to review these issues and the EDHEC Infrastructure and Private Asset Research Institute will put forward several new initiatives aimed at creating clarity and robustness in the assessment of private investments.
  
  MORNING SESSIONS: THE CHALLENGE OF MEASURING PRIVATE VALUE
  Private markets dynamics can be difficult to measure but they can be shown to exist nonetheless. The morning sessions will address the very notion of a private market and, using concrete example from recent transactions, develop the evidence for the existence of private market dynamics that drive investment performance over and beyond deal-specific characteristics. A review ad discussion of asset valuation methodologies and disclosures will follow and highlight the difficulties for investors to capture such dynamics in their investment decisions.
  
  AFTERNOON SESSIONS: A NEW FRAMEWORK FOR PRIVATE ASSET INVESTING
  The afternoon sessions will be the opportunity to introduce a powerful framework to assess private assets consisting of three components: an asset classification system (or taxonomy), a high-frequency asset valuation framework for private companies, and asset-level private market benchmarks that represent and capture the market dynamics to which investors are exposed, including when investing through funds.
  
  DAY 2 – INFRASTRUCTURE – The Imperative of Risk Management.
  
  The second day of the event is focused on infrastructure investing and the importance of understanding, measuring and managing risks in such an asset class. Infrastructure is often presented as a low-risk asset class, but it is not risk free and even though it may have a lower risk profile than traded assets, the value of unlisted infrastructure assets can vary significantly in time for both market-level and asset-level reasons. These sessions cover the topics of risk identification and measurement, including extreme climate risks and social acceptability risks, managing risk concentration risk through diversification, and using the volatility of infrastructure investment positively in an asset-liability management context.
  
  MORNING SESSIONS: THE MATERIALITY OF CLIMATE & SOCIAL RISKS
  Morning sessions on day two will present some of the key findings of EDHEC research on the nature and extent of the climate risks to which investors in infrastructure are exposed before 2050. We present research showing that both transition and physical risks can be very substantial and should a of significant concern to investors and regulators. Brand new research on the social acceptability of infrastructure will also reveal how social media and the press can be used to create predictive analyses of the risks of regulatory intervention or social unrest related to infrastructure projects.
  
  AFTERNOON SESSIONS: THE POINT OF MEASURING VOLATILITY
  The afternoon sessions develop the fundamental question of the riskiness of the infrastructure asset class: infrastructure is expected and understood to have a relatively low risk profile, but it is not risk free and it can be exposed to extreme risks, which is an issue in what are typically highly concentrated portfolios. The various sessions and a panel will discuss how risks can be convincingly measured in infrastructure investments, but also managed through scientific diversification (using good risk data!) and even used to the benefit of investors in an asset-liability context.
